Roma out but Fiorentina still stand a chance...
Francesco Totti had to watch from the sidelines this evening as his Roma where eliminated from the Champions League after loosing 3-0 on aggregate to Manchester United.
The Coppa Italia winners game into the second leg tie on the back of a 2-0 home loss to the Red Devils and they had it all to play for at the Theatre of Dreams.
The giallorossi had to make do without their influential captain Francesco Totti, due to a thigh strain, while Manchester United had some wholes in the back line with Vidic still out due to an injury picked up in the first leg.
But it was the red devils that attacked from the start as they forced Alexandre Doni into some difficult saves, the Brazilian proving decisive for most of the game.
Late into the first half Roma where enjoying their best spell of the game as Amantino Mancini broke through the defence and won a dubious penalty after a tackle made by Wes Brown. It was Daniele De Rossi that stood up to take the penalty, for the second time in a week, but his shot went well over the bar which proved most costly for Roma.
Roma where later forced to substitute Cassetti after a foul by Park saw him reinjured his shoulder injury. The right back had played a solid game all evening and when seen rolling on the floor screaming in pain it was evident that a substitution was required.
But it was Teves that broke Roma as Owen Hargreaves sent in another fantastic cross to see Carlos Teves header the ball into the far post leaving no way back for Roma and to set Manchster United up with Barcelona in the semi-final.
The Italians had to say goodbye to their last remaining team in the Champions League and they by no means be ashamed of the Roman's performance this evening.
With Roma out there is only one remaining Italian team left in all European competitions and that is Cesare Prandelli's Fiorentina. La Viola will travel to Eindhoven to take on PSV in the second leg of the UEFA Cup.
The first leg game at the Stadio Artemio Franchi ended 1-1 and the Tuscan outfit can certainly favour their chances of progressing into the semi-finals.
The whole country is united behind Fiorentina and they surely will do the Italians proud regardless of the result.
