Broken Purple Dreams

Another sad night in Champions League football for Italians has come and gone as Fiorentina where sadly knocked out of the competition due to away goals.

The Tuscan side put up a stellar performance at the Artemio Franchi and mustered a 3-2 win but it was Van Bommel's goal and Robben's stunner that sent the Viola out of the Champions League, crushing their dreams of a quarter final.

Vargas put the Viola in the lead after just 27 minutes with the cheekiest of goals, as he chipped the ball into the far top corner from the tightest of angels while rising star Jovetic increased his asking price with two goals.

The first goal by the Montenegrin saw Gilardino back heel a Marchionni cross for Jovetic to slice it into the back of the net. While the second saw Gilardino play another vital role. The ex-Milan man's header down to Jovetic allowed him to nutmeg the goalkeeper from seven yards out.

But the purple dreams were short lived as the away goal rule came into play crushing the Tuscan side. Prandelli's men can undoubtedly walk out of the competition with their head held high as they proved themselves on countless occasions that they meant business.

Tonight Milan travel to Old Trafford in a tough encounter that will have to see the rossoneri win 2-0 or more in order for them to secure qualification. It will be a rough game but if anyone can the rossoneri can.
