'08 Europe Round-up

The New Year is officially under way and that means only 10 days until Serie A commences again, six months until the South Africa host the Confederations Cup, and a year and a half until Italy will fight to regain their title as World Champions. Nevertheless, all that excitement is still a while away as we say 'hello' to 2009 and 'goodbye' to 2008.

The 2008 year was one of highs and lows for many football fans, however, this is the beauty of football; it's unpredictability has always kept every one waiting until the last minute of what is going to happen. This is why it's called 'The Beautiful Game'.

The first victors of this year was Zenit St. Petersburg when they became the surprise package along with Ranger's in the final of the UEFA Cup. They did a European double as they beat Manchester United in the European Super Cup as they took the crown from Milan.

Manchester also completed an international double as they triumphed in the most prestigious tournament on club level; UEFA Champions League as they beat Chelsea on penalties. While their 10 men side was too strong for LDU Quito as they overcame the Ecuadorian side 1-0 to become the second European team to win the Cup after Milan.

Despite the achievements on club level there was still place for a dash of international fun, as Austria and Switzerland provided the fans with an exciting Euro. As Spain went on to prove their 44-year duck wrong when they triumphed in fine style after knocking out Italy, Russia and beating Germany in the final.

The year proved to be one where English dominance was at its best. Spain proved that they can do anything when they put their mind to it while the Russian's surprised everyone on the club and international stage.

It was ultimately a quiet year for Italian football as their '08 round-up will follow...
