Italy's Freak Accidents...

Marcello Lippi's second reign as the Azzurri coach has started off rather disastrously as the results have been far from good and the team doesn't look like they are about to gel. Not only is the bad style of play a worry but the players that Lippi has at his disposal seem to be diminishing and fast!

Lippi's original squad chosen to face Cyprus and Georgia has seen four players pull out due to freak accidents. Marco Amelia was the first in line as he pulled out due to a slipped disc a few days before the game against Cyrpus. Gianluca Curci was called in as his replacement where he will join Gianluigi Buffon and Morgan De Scantis.

Gamberini and Grosso followed next as they suffered serious injuries in a physical encounter with Cyprus. Alessandro Gamberini was substituted off in the first few minutes of the game as he landed awkwardly dislocating his shoulder. He was taken to hospital immediately where he was put under a general anaesthetic to pop his shoulder back into place.

Fabio Grosso followed his fellow defender soon after as he was taken off due to fractured ribs. The World Cup Hero will be out for a month and his replacement will be Andrea Dossena.

The latest in the line of injuries was Milan's bulldog, Gennaro Gattuso. Rino played his first game against Cyrpus since injuring his shoulder in preseason with Milan. But his return didn't last long as he suffered a bizzare injury to his wrist yesterday in a friendly against unemployed players.
He tumbled into the dug-out where he hit his head and suffered multiple fractures to his left hand. He underwent immediate surgery to reduce the breaks and has also been set to sit on the sidelines for the next month.

These odd-injuries have come in full force and they are really out to test Marcello Lippi's ability to cope under various pressures. Time will only tell how he copes...
