The race is on....

The first midweek match day of the Serie A season saw several unexpected results as Milan continued their new found form, the Grifoni outwitted the Romans, Lazio demolished Fiorentina and Napoli flew in a battle of the Southerners.

Out of the top five teams only two won and both were from Milano. Inter took on a stubborn Lecce side at the San Siro. For most of the time both teams looked like they were going to share spoils as Lecce remained compact, but it was the Gardener that did the cleaning up as Cruz slotted in a 79th minute goal to send the nerazzurri to the top of the table.

While Inter waited until the 79th minute to score their goal their cross-city rivals had to only wait until the 23rd minute where Borriello headed in the opener of the game as well as his Serie A account for Milan. Soon after the break Corradi found the equaliser but it wasn't to be for the Granillo outfit as the unstoppable Pato took home the winner and his third goal in three games.

Gasperini's Genoa side continued to impress at home as they went on to thump Roma 3-1 after the some controversial decisions. Sculli grabbed the opener just four minutes into the game while De Rossi grabbed the equaliser. The World Cup winner certainly proving his worth while stepping up for the absent Francesco Totti. However; it was the Grifoni King, Milito, that stole the show as he brought the rossoblu back in the lead netting his third goal of the season. But soon after the controversy kicked in as Pannucci's goal was ruled off wrongly for offside and minutes later De Rossi was sent off for a dangerous tackle. But it was destined to be Milito's night as he rapped up the game with his second goal of the evening to leave a frustrated Roma with only one win of the season so far.

Contrary to their city rivals Roma, Lazio managed to turn around their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Milan as they put out a strong performance to out play the Fiorentini beating them 3-0. The first half ended goalless but to the surprise of everyone, Fiorentina had 8 crazy minutes of football which saw them concede three goals in quick succession, turning them into a sickly shade of purple. Mauri opened the scoring for Lazio after the ball ricocheted off the inside of the bar to see Mauri over head kick it into the back of the net. The fiery Pandev decided he wanted revenge from the weekend and he latched on to a loose ball to send it home, while Siviglia found himself unmarked in the box where he sent home Lazio's third, stunning the Prandelli's men.

The shock team of the season so far has no doubt got to be Edy Reja's Napoli. When the match timetable came out they must have been angry as they had no easy draw playing, Roma, Fiorentina, Udinese and Palermo in their first four weeks, no easy task for anyone. But the Stadio Olimpico outfit embraced the challenge and they certainly haven't looked back. In a battle of the Southerners Napoli edged out an unbeaten Palermo. Hamisk tapped- in the first goal from six yards out from some great work by Maggio and Zalayeta. The lead was doubled by Zalayeta as his shot rebounded off the cross-bar only for him to tap in it afterwards. Miccoli however gave the Sicilians some hope as he scored off a penalty giving them enough time to find an equaliser but it wasn't to be for the rosanero.

After the results Inter are clear at the top of the table, while the shock teams Lazio and Atalanta are just behind due to their fine form. Milan have rejoined the top half of the table on 6 points while Fiorentina and Roma are still struggling at the bottom half. Both teams will be looking for wins on the weekend as they take on Genoa and Atalanta respectively. The race is on for the scudetto...
