Beautiful Milan strike again

I know this is late but as they say better late than never!

Milan kicked off their defence for the Champions League title in the best possible way with a win against Benfica. The rossoneri looked impressive from the word go as they managed to take the lead 9 minutes into the game with a wonder strike from Andrea Pirlo.
Numerous chances were created by the rossoneri against a Benfica side that looked convinced that they were going to loose once again on Italian soil. However, they did create some chances and the best chance in the first half saw Cardozo header the ball against the upright to sum up Benfica's evening.

But 1-0 was unacceptable for the rossoneri and above all for Pippo Inzaghi who's 60th European goal was looming closer and closer. Kaka picked up the ball in his own half and ran half the length of the field to pass the ball to Pirlo who could have had a decent shot at goal but decided to cross the ball to the unmarked Pippo Inzaghi who volleyed it home to extend the Champions' league and for him to get his 60th European goal.

Benfica's goalkeeper managed to retain the Via Turati outfit with some fantastic saves, while on the other end of the field Dida was in much better form as he too made some vital saves. It was a last minute goal with sloppy defending that saw Nuno Gomes earn his team a consolation goal.

But it was Rui Costa's return to the San Siro that made the game an extra special affair. The ex number 10 received a standing ovation from the fans when he was substituted, it was his tribute that was extra touching as he beat his hand to his chest signalling that Milan will forever be in his heart.

A great game, a great tribute from Rui. It couldn't have got much better than that.

Congratulations for your AC Milan blog, great display!

It was a joy seeing Milan fans welcoming Manuel Rui Costa. He deserves the standing ovation at the end of the match for all the things he did for Milan during his seasons from 2001-2006: a total of 169 presences, scoring 7 goals, winning five trophies, including the Champions League in 2003, a European Super Cup, and one Scudetto.
